India’s Census 2027 begins today, with 40 questions that include a caste query for the first time since Independence. The census will collect data, but individuals will not be asked to provide private information unless it is already available to the government. The census is set to be conducted through self-enumeration in some areas, including Ladakh and snowbound regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
