When he was the Congress vice-president and tore away the 2013 ordinance that sought to overturn the rule that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs. This was done to nullify the SC verdict striking down Section 8(4) of the RP Act, which gave protection to convicted MPs from disqualification for three months.

Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP following his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi surname’ remark. The disqualification is effective from March 23, the date of conviction. Several opposition leaders have rallied behind Rahul and accused the BJP of targeting political opponents. Congress has launched a ‘Jan-Andolan’ across the country over Rahul’s disqualification. The Congress alleged that there had been “unthinkable assaults” on the freedom of speech with people being told that they will face the worst possible consequences. The Congress welcomed the statements of opposition leaders condemning Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha and said it was now time for the party to take on the job of building the opposition unity in a “systematic way”. The grand old party also said it has been coordinating with various opposition parties in Parliament and now the coordination has to be outside the two Houses as well.
