In a major setback to ride sharing platforms Ola, Uber and Rapido, the Delhi Transport Department on February 20 issued a public notice to stop plying their bike taxi services effective immediately.


Delhi’s Transport Authority has banned aggregators such as Rapido, Uber and Ola from operating Taxi cabs in the metropolitan area. The Ministry of Transport has said aggregators who violate the order will face a fine of INR 100,000.

The Delhi Ministry of Transport has determined that a cycle taxi operating in Delhi NCR violates the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 as it is against public order. This is because the law prohibits the use of two-wheeled vehicles for commercial purposes.

The Delhi government has classified violations under the pedicab ban into three levels of severity. The first offense may lead him to a fine of INR 5,000 and the second offense may lead him to a fine of INR 10,000 and imprisonment for up to one year. Drivers will also lose their driver’s license for three months.
